I hope you were all pleasantly surprised by Tuesday’s Surprise Event. Judging by the response, I would say it was a huge success. It’s not something we can do all of the time, or even on a regular basis. But, once in a while, it’s fun for all!
Streaming Video made it’s debut this week on our website at www.magicfact.com. What a cool idea it is! And, it is going to continue to get better and better as more and more videos are added to the list of available titles. I have to be honest, I even ordered a couple to watch at home. I think it’s very neat to be able to watch the Reel Magic DVDs right on my computer. But, that’s just me. It’s well worth checking out, and giving it a try. My guess is that you will be hooked!
On the home front, Aron the Elder Son leaves today for his first big after-college job. He will be working at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. What better job for a history boy? He and Bonnie will be driving down to DC today and getting him all set up. Then, Bonnie flies home on Tuesday.
Lucas The Singing Son turned 21 this week. Happy Birthday to him! Hard to believe that the years fly by so fast. Julia, Lucas’ GFF, threw him a big surprise party on Wednesday. She worked really hard on the event. There was a Salsa Band, an Open Mike Hour and Lucas got to wear a giant Sombrero. Now that he’s legal, he could even drink a giant Sombrero, but I’ll bet he didn’t.

A spectator is asked to think of any card in the deck, write it down on a piece of paper, and put that piece of paper in their pocket. Ask the spectator to name the card they are merely thinking of... the spectator turns the card over and it is the thought of card!!
Time Zone - Imagine a spectator thinks of a time, a second spectator removes 3 cards from the deck, when the thought of time is named, the second spectator reveals her cards. The value of the cards match the thought of time!
Name and Card Routine - This is B. Smith’s killer card routine with multiple, impossible climaxes! Imagine not only being able to know the card someone is thinking of, but also know when they think 'stop' while dealing through the deck. (2) Al’s Miracle Load Salt Pour: The effect is well known to most magicians. Take a saltshaker and pour some salt into your clenched fist. Open your hand and the salt has vanished! You then reach into the air, close your hand and suddenly a seemingly endless stream of salt pours out of your previously empty hand.
Fred Kaps and many others have made the Long Salt Pour effect into a great classic. If you have seen Kaps perform this finale to his great manipulative act you will remember that, as the salt pours out of his hand, the orchestra starts up with the final music for his act. The music is almost at an end but still the salt continues to pour. Fred signals the orchestra to keep the music rolling and it starts up again. This happens several times and it seems as if the salt is never going to stop pouring. Then, as the salt finally comes to an end, Fred rubs his hands together for a moment and throws the gimmick, that he used, into the Top-it in the tail of his evening tail coat. His hands are empty and he is clean.
Fred Kaps used to pick up his gimmick from his table, due to his extreme skill, he had no problem ditching his gimmick. Others have not been so successful.
There are some wonderful gimmicks available to use and they vary in price from cheap to very, very expensive. They all have on thing in common. You have to load them into your hand and ditch them somewhere at the end of the performance.
If you have a gimmick full of salt in your hand and you slowly pour out streams of salt the audience wonder if you are holding some kind of container, so the end ditch is very difficult because the audience have their eyes on your hand and wonder what is in it.
Al's Miracle Salt Pour gimmick is completely different. You start clean and end clean and can show both hands empty at the beginning and the end of the effect.

(4) Three Card Prince – Harry Anderson: Harry Anderson's Three Card Monarch is one of the best versions of Three Card Monte ever. The routine is great. If you work a lot of big shows, the effect can't be beat. However, it is a little large for club dates and parlor shows!
