I am sick. Not sick with a capital “S”. Sick with a small “s”. It all started last Saturday. I woke up in the morning with a wicked sore throat. One of those that feel like there’s a golf ball stuck in your throat. So, I began the drill. Gargle with warm salt water. Take Mucinex every 12 hours. Load up on Vitamin C. Spray with Chloraseptic. All the usual stuff. By Wednesday, the sore throat was gone, but I had developed a cough and other cold symptoms. So, I added Robitussin to the mix, and hopefully the cough will go away in a short while. In all, I feel pretty yucky. I forgot to mention that Tuesday, Bonnie made me a big pot of chicken soup. It actually made me feel better. Go figure.

(1) Shift – Self Bending Fork: Fork and Spoon bending, while beautiful and elegant, has always had a major drawback. You have to do the dirty work. The magician always had to bear the burden of covering a movement here, or protecting an angle there.
In a breakthrough, Shift: Self Bending Fork activates its bending movements using only your spectator's body heat. You can manipulate the molecules of metal without touching the fork.

(2) Ring In Ball Of Wool – Dave Powell: This is a set of Nested Boxes for the working professional!
A black cloth bag tied on both ends is seen resting on a table or can be hanging in full view.
The performer places a wine glass on the table and borrows a finger ring from any spectator. The ring is placed in the folds of a handkerchief and given to the spectator to hold over the mouth of the wine glass. He can actually feel the ring through the handkerchief and is told to hold it tight.
The performer opens the bag and removes a beautiful walnut box and sets it in full view of the audience.
The spectator is asked to drop the ring into the glass.
She lets go of the ring and it clinks as it falls into the glass.
The performer immediately whisks the handkerchief away from the glass. The ring has vanished!
The spectator is then handed a key to the box. She unlocks it and opens the box herself. Inside she finds a ball of yarn, which she unrolls to discover another box, held closed by several rubber bands.
The spectator removes the rubber bands and opens the box herself. Inside, she finds her very own ring!

Speaking of the Conclave, and aren’t I always, we just added Spain's fabulous Enric Magoo to this year’s lineup. Very exciting. He’ll be doing his award-winning Frankenstein act, and taking a turn at close-up. Do I have to remind you to register? It’s just three months away!

Lucas the Singing Son is off to Houston this week to audition for the Rice University graduate opera program. Funny thing about Rice. It wasn’t at the top of his list, until Julia started there this September. Now, he is very excited to audition there? Hmmm.

(8) Logical Deck – Masuda & Touson: Without touching or looking at a selected card, you can divine the name of the selection even without asking question. This can be done with the Logical Deck.

(9) Blindsight II – Devin Knight: The performer shows an 8.5” x 11” inch chart that has the names of four different colors printed on it in different color inks. He says he will attempt to confuse a participant's mind. A participant is asked to quickly call out the color of the ink that each word is printed in. Despite his best efforts, he invariably miscalls some of the colors. For example, if the ink is blue, but the word is r-e-d, he may say it is red.
This is all very amusing to the audience as the spectator cannot seem to say all the colors correctly!
The performer says that if the participant is having trouble correctly naming colors that he can see, perhaps he can do better if with colors he cannot see.
Offer to try an experiment to see if the participant has the ability to detect colors, sight unseen. The performer shows some opaque envelopes and four different large colored cards. The four cards are placed inside the 6” x 9” envelopes and mixed so the participant has no idea which envelope contains which colored card.
Next the envelopes are held up one at a time in front of the participant. The performer asks the participant to attempt to use Blindsight (the ability to see colors, sight unseen in your mind) to determine which color is in each envelope.
The participant says which color he thinks is inside the first envelope. The performer then writes that color on the outside of the envelope. This is repeated until all the envelopes have a color written on the outside of them. After each envelope has a color written on it, the participant is asked to set aside one envelope for the grand finale.
The performer each envelope and shows that the participant has successfully used Blindsight to correctly determine which color was inside each envelope. The performer has the participant pick up the envelope he set aside and remove the colored card. Assume it is yellow. Obviously, it matches the color written on the envelope because the other three were correct.
This is pretty amazing in itself, but the real kicker is yet to come. The performer states that nobody could have known which envelope and color the participant would set aside. The performer shows the back of the chart (which has been in full view) containing the list of colors. The back of the chart has printed on it: YOU WILL SET ASIDE YELLOW. This makes for a stunning climax that can be seen from the largest stages.

Friday With Hank Lee - The Excitement Is Back!

Greetings from all of us at Hank Lee’s Magic Factory. I am just loving this winter. Monday night we had a couple of inches of snow. Before I could get Aron to shovel the front walk, the snow was gone! Today, it’s in the 40s. This is my kind of winter.

Last week, do you remember last week, I asked what you all thought about sending the email Newsletter on Friday and the Weekly Excitement on Monday. I didn’t expect a tremendous response, because I didn’t think people had strong opinions either way. Boy, was I wrong. I got a ton of emails from all of you. And, everyone who responded was of the same opinion. Combine the two parts and send them on Friday. My mother raised no fool. If I am ever going to win the People’s Choice Award, I really have to do what the people want. So, starting this week, we go back to the old way. The Friday Newsletter will contain the Weekly Excitement. And, we will do a re-run of the Newsletter on Monday for those who might have missed it on Friday. Just so you know, if you ever have an opinion about something we are doing, whether you are in favor of it or against it, please let me know. Your opinion really does matter to me.

Lucas the Singing Son is in Maryland this week to audition for the University of Maryland Graduate Opera Program. He’s staying with Bonnie’s sister Daryll. Daryll reported a case of laryngitis. A bummer indeed. So, Bonnie had Daryll go out and get some face masks (the kind that Michael Jackson used to wear) so as not to spread her malaise to any budding Opera stars. Bonnie has the power.

Bonnie, Aron and I are off to Concord, New Hampshire tonight to see the Intergalactic Nemesis. I didn’t know what it was either. Turns out it’s a live-action graphic novel.Aron says it’s a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience that mashes up radio drama with comic-books. Sounds like fun, yes? I hope so, because it’s a long shlep to Concord. I will let you know next week.

Friday With Hank Lee - Just a Little Snow!

Greetings from all of us at Hank Lee’s Magic Factory. This has been a terrific week, the kind I like!  When I looked out the window on Tuesday morning, what to my surprise, but a delightful coating of snow on the trees and the ground. It was just a light frosting, and was gone by mid-morning. It’s snow the way I like it. Here for a couple of hours, then gone. I know that we will be getting more,  sooner rather than later. But, for now, I enjoyed it and then I didn’t.

Today, the 13th of January, is Aron the Elder Son’s birthday. He is 25 years old today. He is most certainly a young adult. But, he’s still my big kid. Know what I mean?

(10) Big Reaction – Andy Nyman: The magician has several spectators "create" a card by naming each piece of the card, such as the color, suit and value.
They are told that if the magician gets the effect wrong, they can "Boo" him and if he gets it correct, they can all "Go Crazy" with cheers and applause.
The magician then goes thru the face up deck and finds the card that was named and it is placed aside.
The backs of all of the other cards are shown to have the word "Boo" written on the back of each one. The attention is returned to the chosen card and in a different colored ink, the words "Go Crazy" are written on the back of the chosen card.

Show two packets of face-down cards, each packet containing four cards. One packet is red-backed; the other is blue backed. Place the packets on the table. Ask a spectator to select either packet, red or blue. Whichever packet he chooses you use. No force.
Ask the spectator to imagine that his packet consists of four face-down Queens. Ask him to merely think of one of the Queens: Hearts, Clubs, Spades or Diamonds. A totally free choice.
Ask a second spectator to concentrate on the remaining four-card packet. He is to think of a different Queen than the first spectator's.
Now, without touching the cards, you claim that you have caused the two selections to change place! The first spectator names his card. You spread the packet. There is one card face up. It is the selected Queen!
Do the same with the second packet. The second spectator's card is the only one face up! It's an absolute miracle. But, it's not over yet!
Explain that if the cards really changed place, the backs of the selected Queens would have also changed place. The face-up Queen in the red packet is turned over. It has a blue back! The face-up Queen in the blue packet is turned over. It has a red back! Unbelievable. But, it's not over yet!
Point out that it is very interesting that the two spectators selected the Queens they did, because the rest of the cards are all Jokers!! Turn them all face up to prove it! Yikes! A killer effect!
How many moves does the routine require? None! Not even one! No sleight of hand required. Everyone will be fooled by Twisted Sisters, even the wise guys who've seen it all!
