Greetings from all of us at Hank Lee’s Magic Factory. It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is just one short week away! I can already smell the turkey cooking! Actually, I can already smell the turkey. Seems that Bonnie left the freezer door slightly ajar, and everything in the freezer defrosted, including her Thanksgiving turkey. Rather than toss it in the trash bin, she decided to cook it this week. Smart girl. So, we started eating turkey on Tuesday, and already have been eating leftovers. Whad’ya think? Two weeks of turkey is just a little over the top?

The performer talks about the early testing implements used back in the 1940's to test Uranium and Nuclear Fusion, all steps to creating the Atomic Bomb.

(8) Automated Osmosis: Show two clear empty glasses and a solid glass square.

Milk or any other liquid is poured into the upper glass and the liquid remains there as expected.

Friday The 13th!
Greetings from all of us at Hank Lee’s Magic Factory.
The past couple of weeks saw two major losses in the magic world. The first was Carl Ballantine. Carl was 92 years old, and still one of the funniest men in magic. To my knowledge, he was the first professional magician to break into television with a role in a TV Sitcom. His character in McHale’s Navy was one of the main reasons to watch that show. He will be missed. There is a great YouTube video of Carl performing on the original Donny and Marie Show. It is hilarious and well worth watching.
The other major loss was Frank Radtke, owner of The House of Fakini. Frank was instrumental in creating Silicone Balls, for both jugglers and magicians. The Fakini Multiplying Balls are absolutely the industry standard and are used by an absolute Who’s Who of Magicians. We are hoping that someone will take over the business and make sure that these items remain available.
This past Wednesday was Veteran’s Day. A day to stop and remember all of those who served our country in the military. Both my father and my father-in-law served in World War II. Surprisingly both served in the China, Burma, India campaign. When my Dad was alive, he would regale us with stories of the war. Especially after he had a couple of glasses of wine at dinner. My father-in-law, thankfully still very much alive, loves to tell stories of the war. He doesn’t even need any wine to get started. We’ve heard his stories a hundred times, and we can tell them right along with him. Interestingly, lately he has come up with some stories we had not heard before. Seems he’s been holding out on us all this time! I want to take a second to let all of those in the service know how much we appreciate what they are doing for our country.
Last weekend we were in Oberlin, Ohio for Parents’ Weekend. I surprised Bonnie with a guest appearance by Aron The Elder Son. Since it was our 25th Anniversary, I thought it would be great to have Aron fly in from Gainesville for the weekend. And, I was right. She was totally surprised. Tears in her eyes. Nice job on my part.
On the magic front. This week, Hand Out 500 arrived in stock and all the back-orders were shipped. I was going to take a photo of the back orders ready to be shipped, but I couldn’t fit it all in one photo. There were a ton of them. I would point out that Paul Harris’ Little Man is on the Hotlist for pre-order. You should get on this right away, so you will get yours in the first batch. The past couple of weeks saw two major losses in the magic world. The first was Carl Ballantine. Carl was 92 years old, and still one of the funniest men in magic. To my knowledge, he was the first professional magician to break into television with a role in a TV Sitcom. His character in McHale’s Navy was one of the main reasons to watch that show. He will be missed. There is a great YouTube video of Carl performing on the original Donny and Marie Show. It is hilarious and well worth watching.
The other major loss was Frank Radtke, owner of The House of Fakini. Frank was instrumental in creating Silicone Balls, for both jugglers and magicians. The Fakini Multiplying Balls are absolutely the industry standard and are used by an absolute Who’s Who of Magicians. We are hoping that someone will take over the business and make sure that these items remain available.
This past Wednesday was Veteran’s Day. A day to stop and remember all of those who served our country in the military. Both my father and my father-in-law served in World War II. Surprisingly both served in the China, Burma, India campaign. When my Dad was alive, he would regale us with stories of the war. Especially after he had a couple of glasses of wine at dinner. My father-in-law, thankfully still very much alive, loves to tell stories of the war. He doesn’t even need any wine to get started. We’ve heard his stories a hundred times, and we can tell them right along with him. Interestingly, lately he has come up with some stories we had not heard before. Seems he’s been holding out on us all this time! I want to take a second to let all of those in the service know how much we appreciate what they are doing for our country.
Last weekend we were in Oberlin, Ohio for Parents’ Weekend. I surprised Bonnie with a guest appearance by Aron The Elder Son. Since it was our 25th Anniversary, I thought it would be great to have Aron fly in from Gainesville for the weekend. And, I was right. She was totally surprised. Tears in her eyes. Nice job on my part.
On the magic front. This week, Hand Out 500 arrived in stock and all the back-orders were shipped. I was going to take a photo of the back orders ready to be shipped, but I couldn’t fit it all in one photo. There were a ton of them. The New Tenyo Line For 2010!
Greetings from all of us at Hank Lee’s Magic Factory. A big week, all around!
This week, Bonnie and I celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniversary. The Silver Anniversary. Over the years, I have made a lot of little jokes about Bonnie, but the truth is I cannot imagine my life without her. Actually, I can imagine it, and it’s not such a pretty picture. We celebrated by having dinner at one of our favorite restaurants, Il Casale. And I gave her a very special Twenty Five Year Service Pin (the joke but not really a joke gift) and a very nice bracelet (silver of course). A nice day, for sure.
On the magic front, this week we received samples of the new 2010 Tenyo Magic line. This is always a good time, as we get to play with the toys! This year, there are five new items. Our favorite is Angelo Carbone’s Floating Card. This one looks like a real miracle, and is so well made, you won’t believe your eyes. One of the items, the China Surprise, we will be carrying in very limited numbers, because none of us think it is an item our customers would like. Last weekend we were in Philadelphia, visiting with Harry and Elizabeth Anderson. Harry had a show at the Mutter Museum of Medical Anomalies. If you find yourself in Philadelphia, this museum is a must. I have never, ever seen anything like it in life. To be honest, it’s a little weird, but really interesting. The show was great. The reception after the show was fun. And, spending time with the Andersons was the best. I had not been to Philadelphia for thirty years, and I can tell you that it is a great town. We did all the sightseeing stuff. Bonnie even went to the Diana Exhibit at the Constitution Center. I drew the line at that, but did check out the other exhibits in the center. I was blown away by the life size bronze sculptures of all of the signers of The Constitution. We had Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches for lunch (what’s all the hub-bub with this, anyway?). And, we were home on Sunday evening.

Boo!
Greetings from all of us at Hank Lee’s Magic Factory. As you know, this is Halloween weekend. I hope you have a lot of shows booked on Friday and Saturday. Maybe even a couple on Sunday. If you bought new props this year from us for your Halloween shows, take a picture of yourself using your new prop, and maybe we’ll publish it in the email Newsletter.
Right now, as you read this letter, Bonnie and I are on the way to Philadelphia to meet up with Harry Anderson and his family. We’ll be at Harry’s show on Friday night and then spend some quality time just hangin.’ Harry’s Big Money has been selling like crazy. I had to call Harry and twist his arm a little to get him to send us more. He did, so we will be able to fill everyone’s orders.
Normally, when we go away, even for a couple of days, we need to park Bones will a puppy-sitter. Well, I decided it was time to teach Bones to puppy-sit himself. So, we’ve been working really hard to teach him to get his own food (and not eat the whole 20 pound bag) and to let himself in and out of the house (and not run away).
I just got this note from good friend Chipper Lowell. “We'll be coming through your area at the end of November. Our show, ‘BLiNK! - An Incredible Evening of Award-Winning Magic!’ will be at The Music Hall, in Portsmouth, NH on November 27 & 28. Starring myself, with special guest artists: Jade, Christopher Hart, and Joe Devlin. 8pm evening performance on Friday, the 27th, and an 11am matinee (1-hour version) on Saturday, the 28th. “

Up The Ante – Martyn Smith: What would you do when faced with a bet so unbelievably good that you simply couldn't lose? How far would you go? What are your limits?
Imagine if you will that a spectator is able to cut, deal and shuffle your cards, without you touching them whatsoever. Yet, you are able to make the most unbelievable bets upon the cards he or she deals to the table! There is no sleight of hand and this works with totally un-gaffed cards! You are able to bet that the first several pairs dealt face down to the table will contain both a red and a black card. When you have had enough of challenging your opponent in this way, you then propose that the next group of cards dealt will contain one card of each suit! Amazingly you are able to repeat that feat a second time.

Up The Ante – Martyn Smith: What would you do when faced with a bet so unbelievably good that you simply couldn't lose? How far would you go? What are your limits?
Imagine if you will that a spectator is able to cut, deal and shuffle your cards, without you touching them whatsoever. Yet, you are able to make the most unbelievable bets upon the cards he or she deals to the table! There is no sleight of hand and this works with totally un-gaffed cards! You are able to bet that the first several pairs dealt face down to the table will contain both a red and a black card. When you have had enough of challenging your opponent in this way, you then propose that the next group of cards dealt will contain one card of each suit! This is repeated a few times before you make the final, outrageous wager that, if thirteen face down cards were dealt then that group will contain an Ace right through to a King - thirteen different cards in all! Amazingly you are able to repeat that feat a second time.
If you did not possess a reputation as a card-sharp before this routine, you certainly will at the end! Remember that you did not shuffle or indeed even handle the cards!

The Good and The Bad
Greetings from all of us at Hank Lee’s Magic Factory. As you know, we always try and look at the bright side of life. But, to be honest, some weeks are better than others. I thought this week was one of the better ones, until yesterday.
Yesterday, my office computer let me know that it was about to fail. Failure is not a good thing. But, knowing that failure is imminent is a great thing. I had time to back up everything important. And, I could take a leisurely stroll to the Apple Store and pick up a new Mighty Mini. I’m not sure when the Apple folks added the failure imminent feature, but I am really glad they did!
The other bad news this week came from the West Coast. Hollywood Magic, an institution in the magic world, has closed its doors. There are all kinds of stories swirling around about what happened, but the bottom line is that they are closed. I couldn’t be more sorry to hear the news. It is never good when a magic company goes out of business. I sincerely hope that whatever issues caused the closing will be resolved and that they will re-open at some point.
Thankfully, there was some good news this week. I spent most of Thursday afternoon talking with my old pal Harry Anderson. We have Harry’s latest effect, Big Money, in this week’s Hotlist. It is a mighty fine effect and available in limited supply. I rarely get a chance to see Harry, but it turns out that he is performing in Philadelphia the day before Halloween. Explain that some card players seem to have psychic abilities. These card players can correctly sense the cards in an opponent's hand. Say that you would like to try an experiment to see if a participant has this ability to detect playing cards sight unseen.
Show four opaque envelopes and remove the four Aces from a deck. Place the four Aces inside the envelopes and mix them so the participant has no idea which envelope contains which Ace.
Next, place the envelopes in a row in front of the participant. Ask the participant to guess which Ace is in each envelope.
The participant points to one envelope and tells you which Ace he thinks is inside. Write the suit of that Ace on the outside of the envelope. This is repeated until each envelope has a suit written on the outside of it. Fan out the four envelopes, allowing the participant to see the suits written on each envelope. State that you only need three envelopes for the first phase of the test. Tell the participant to remove one envelope and place it aside as his lucky card. Assume he placed aside the envelope with Hearts written on it.
Open each of the three remaining envelopes and show that the participant has correctly guessed which Ace was in each envelope. This is amazing in itself, but the real kicker is yet to come.
Explain that no one could have known which envelope the participant would place aside. The participant then picks up the envelope that was placed aside and opens it. You do not touch the envelope. Inside is the correct Ace, but there is also a slip of paper with a handwritten note. The note says: “This card was placed aside as your lucky card. It is the Ace of Hearts.” The participant can then verify the other three envelopes are empty and devoid of predictions. He may fully examine both the envelopes and four Aces.

Yesterday, my office computer let me know that it was about to fail. Failure is not a good thing. But, knowing that failure is imminent is a great thing. I had time to back up everything important. And, I could take a leisurely stroll to the Apple Store and pick up a new Mighty Mini. I’m not sure when the Apple folks added the failure imminent feature, but I am really glad they did!
The other bad news this week came from the West Coast. Hollywood Magic, an institution in the magic world, has closed its doors. There are all kinds of stories swirling around about what happened, but the bottom line is that they are closed. I couldn’t be more sorry to hear the news. It is never good when a magic company goes out of business. I sincerely hope that whatever issues caused the closing will be resolved and that they will re-open at some point.
Thankfully, there was some good news this week. I spent most of Thursday afternoon talking with my old pal Harry Anderson. We have Harry’s latest effect, Big Money, in this week’s Hotlist. Explain that some card players seem to have psychic abilities. These card players can correctly sense the cards in an opponent's hand. Say that you would like to try an experiment to see if a participant has this ability to detect playing cards sight unseen.
Show four opaque envelopes and remove the four Aces from a deck. Place the four Aces inside the envelopes and mix them so the participant has no idea which envelope contains which Ace.
Next, place the envelopes in a row in front of the participant. Ask the participant to guess which Ace is in each envelope.
The participant points to one envelope and tells you which Ace he thinks is inside. Write the suit of that Ace on the outside of the envelope. This is repeated until each envelope has a suit written on the outside of it. Fan out the four envelopes, allowing the participant to see the suits written on each envelope. State that you only need three envelopes for the first phase of the test. Tell the participant to remove one envelope and place it aside as his lucky card. Assume he placed aside the envelope with Hearts written on it.
Open each of the three remaining envelopes and show that the participant has correctly guessed which Ace was in each envelope. This is amazing in itself, but the real kicker is yet to come.
Explain that no one could have known which envelope the participant would place aside. The participant then picks up the envelope that was placed aside and opens it. You do not touch the envelope. Inside is the correct Ace, but there is also a slip of paper with a handwritten note. The note says: “This card was placed aside as your lucky card. It is the Ace of Hearts.” The participant can then verify the other three envelopes are empty and devoid of predictions. He may fully examine both the envelopes and four Aces.

We're Doing It Again!
Greetings from all of us here at Hank Lee’s Magic Factory. Another fun week here at the factory.
Bonnie and I decided that Sunday would be a great day to drive around and look at the foliage. Not quite true. She decided that she really wanted to look at the foliage and that I should drive. I told her to take a walk out on the back deck and she could see all the foliage she needed. We have all kinds of trees and they have turned all kinds of colors. Not good enough, she said. So, we downloaded a driving guide to the foliage of central Massachusetts. I figured while the rest of the tourists headed North to see the leaves, we would head West, spend some time on the old Mohawk Trail and see the same leaves without a zillion cars. We followed the directions exactly, ended up driving through all kinds of residential neighborhoods, through hill and dale, and finally saw the foliage. There it was. Red and orange and yellow, just like in our back yard. We took a side trip to the top of Mt. Wachusett, and I must say that the view from the top was spectacular. It wasn’t just foliage. It was an incredible bucolic scene complete with lakes and hills and, yes, foliage. After seeing all the leaves, we were hungry for lunch. Don’t even ask. We ended up in the middle of Leominster, Massachusetts and, since just about everything was closed, had lunch at Papa John’s Pizza. Again, don’t ask. It was pizza unlike any I have ever had in life. Enough said.
In just a few short hours, Lucas the Singing Son, will touch down at Boston’s Logan Airport. He is home for a week. Oberlin College is very liberal with their breaks. I can’t wait to see him. We have a lot of movies to see, and a lot of TV to catch up on! Maybe we can even get him to sing a little aria for us. What, stranger things have happened!

Teddy Bear Turmoil – Jim Carmody: Very rarely do we see a new effect that has all of the characteristics of a classic. Jim Carmody's Teddy Bear Turmoil is just that! Designed and engineered by Chris Penar, this extremely commercial effect is sure to be the one that your audience will be talking about!
Display a beautiful hand-crafted toy box from your childhood and recruit a young volunteer from the audience to assist. Reach into the box and remove several toys. (ballerina slippers, Barbie doll, an 8' straw, etc.)
Show the box empty. Revolve the box 90 degrees (it’s on a lazy susan) showing that one side of the box is actually a white board. With the help of your assistant, take turns drawing a simple picture of a Teddy Bear that you had as a child. Once completed, give the box another spin, open the lid and remove a large Teddy Bear, which has magically appeared. Hand the bear to your helper to hold.
Now the fun begins!
Showing the white board, take an eraser and erase one of the legs from the Teddy Bear.
While the volunteer is holding the bear, the matching leg magically falls to the floor!
The audience reaction is instant laughter. Continue with the second leg, and again, after it has been erased the bear’s leg falls to the floor!
Next erase one of the bear’s arms. Nothing happens! Erase the other arm and both of the bear’s arms go crashing to the floor.
At this point the audience is in stitches. Continue to erase the bear’s head."We’re sure lucky the head didn't fall off.” As the words leave your mouth, the bear’s head falls to the floor and your little helper is left holding only a stump! (It really looks hilarious - like a Thanksgiving turkey!)
Instruct the little helper to “pick up their toys” and put the pieces back into the toy box. Ask the helper to draw another bear on their own. After only a few seconds, you revolve the box to reveal yours helper’s artistic talents. The box is now “painted” with a full color image of the Teddy Bear! "Pretty impressive for a young artist, and so fast too", you comment.
Give the box another spin, open the lid and have the youngster reach inside and remove the Teddy Bear, now fully restored! Give the bear to your helper as a souvenir!

Bonnie and I decided that Sunday would be a great day to drive around and look at the foliage. Not quite true. She decided that she really wanted to look at the foliage and that I should drive. I told her to take a walk out on the back deck and she could see all the foliage she needed. We have all kinds of trees and they have turned all kinds of colors. Not good enough, she said. So, we downloaded a driving guide to the foliage of central Massachusetts. I figured while the rest of the tourists headed North to see the leaves, we would head West, spend some time on the old Mohawk Trail and see the same leaves without a zillion cars. We followed the directions exactly, ended up driving through all kinds of residential neighborhoods, through hill and dale, and finally saw the foliage. There it was. Red and orange and yellow, just like in our back yard. We took a side trip to the top of Mt. Wachusett, and I must say that the view from the top was spectacular. It wasn’t just foliage. It was an incredible bucolic scene complete with lakes and hills and, yes, foliage. After seeing all the leaves, we were hungry for lunch. Don’t even ask. We ended up in the middle of Leominster, Massachusetts and, since just about everything was closed, had lunch at Papa John’s Pizza. Again, don’t ask. It was pizza unlike any I have ever had in life. Enough said.
In just a few short hours, Lucas the Singing Son, will touch down at Boston’s Logan Airport. He is home for a week. Oberlin College is very liberal with their breaks. I can’t wait to see him. We have a lot of movies to see, and a lot of TV to catch up on! Maybe we can even get him to sing a little aria for us. What, stranger things have happened!

Teddy Bear Turmoil – Jim Carmody: Very rarely do we see a new effect that has all of the characteristics of a classic. Jim Carmody's Teddy Bear Turmoil is just that! Designed and engineered by Chris Penar, this extremely commercial effect is sure to be the one that your audience will be talking about!
Display a beautiful hand-crafted toy box from your childhood and recruit a young volunteer from the audience to assist. Reach into the box and remove several toys. (ballerina slippers, Barbie doll, an 8' straw, etc.)
Show the box empty. Revolve the box 90 degrees (it’s on a lazy susan) showing that one side of the box is actually a white board. With the help of your assistant, take turns drawing a simple picture of a Teddy Bear that you had as a child. Once completed, give the box another spin, open the lid and remove a large Teddy Bear, which has magically appeared. Hand the bear to your helper to hold.
Now the fun begins!
Showing the white board, take an eraser and erase one of the legs from the Teddy Bear.
While the volunteer is holding the bear, the matching leg magically falls to the floor!
The audience reaction is instant laughter. Continue with the second leg, and again, after it has been erased the bear’s leg falls to the floor!
Next erase one of the bear’s arms. Nothing happens! Erase the other arm and both of the bear’s arms go crashing to the floor.
At this point the audience is in stitches. Continue to erase the bear’s head."We’re sure lucky the head didn't fall off.” As the words leave your mouth, the bear’s head falls to the floor and your little helper is left holding only a stump! (It really looks hilarious - like a Thanksgiving turkey!)
Instruct the little helper to “pick up their toys” and put the pieces back into the toy box. Ask the helper to draw another bear on their own. After only a few seconds, you revolve the box to reveal yours helper’s artistic talents. The box is now “painted” with a full color image of the Teddy Bear! "Pretty impressive for a young artist, and so fast too", you comment.
Give the box another spin, open the lid and have the youngster reach inside and remove the Teddy Bear, now fully restored! Give the bear to your helper as a souvenir!

Read This One Twice!
Greetings from all of us at Hank Lee’s Magic Factory. As Halloween gets closer and closer, it’s looking more and more like Halloween is getting closer. The leaves are turning bright orange and the nighttime weather outside is getting a little nippy. Just the way I like it.
We spent a wonderful weekend in Gainesville, Florida. We visited with Aron the Elder Son and ate at some great restaurants. The weather was really nice, sunny and warm. We had a chance to spend some time with Aron’s new roommates, and they are just so nice. As you might have guessed we also spent some time helping him organize his room and getting everything in order. We also showed him how the washing machine and dryer worked (although I suspect he already knew). In all, time well spent.
Lucas the Singing Son turned 20 on the 6th of October. How old does that make me feel? Old. Bonnie baked him a cake and sent it along to him, because, I am told, they do not have cakes in Oberlin, Ohio. Personally, I think they do, but I am told I must pick my battles.

We spent a wonderful weekend in Gainesville, Florida. We visited with Aron the Elder Son and ate at some great restaurants. The weather was really nice, sunny and warm. We had a chance to spend some time with Aron’s new roommates, and they are just so nice. As you might have guessed we also spent some time helping him organize his room and getting everything in order. We also showed him how the washing machine and dryer worked (although I suspect he already knew). In all, time well spent.
Lucas the Singing Son turned 20 on the 6th of October. How old does that make me feel? Old. Bonnie baked him a cake and sent it along to him, because, I am told, they do not have cakes in Oberlin, Ohio. Personally, I think they do, but I am told I must pick my battles.
