Greetings from all of us at Hank Lee’s Magic Factory. Finally, I am back home for a while. I like to travel as much as the next guy. But, in the past month, it’s been a little out of control.
Last Sunday, I traveled all the way to beautiful Sacramento, California to visit one of the largest magic distributors, Murphy’s Magic Supplies. And, what an interesting experience it was. Lorie Slebodnick our Sales Rep and Michelle Quinn, Murphy’s Sales Manager picked me at the airport in Sacramento. Then, it was off for a whirlwind tour of the city. About fifteen minutes into the tour my brain had already fried. It was over 90 degrees outside and I had forgotten a hat. As you know, there is little protection on top of my head, so there was definitely some cranial cooking. We all had a nice lunch in Sacramento in, and this is key, an air conditioned restaurant. Then, a little more touring and it was off to the always deluxe Holiday Inn for a well-deserved rest. I think I fell asleep at 8:00!
The next morning, we got going bright and early. A full tour of the Murphy’s facility, the chance to meet the staff and some very productive meetings. If you keep your eyes open over the next few weeks, you should see some web site changes which are a direct result of those meetings. I have to tell you that the Murphy warehouse is just plain big. They carry a ton of magic, and by a ton, I mean more than a ton!
I was at Murphy’s for two full days, and I even took notes at some of the meetings. At my age, I can’t leave anything to memory. Like remembering to take my camera so I could bring back some photos. Forgot that one, sorry.
Anyway, I had a grand time and want to especially thanks Lorie, who went way beyond the call of duty to make my trip easy-peasey.

(3) Unshop – Devin Knight: A comedy mental effect based on a new term, Unshop, which means to return something at the checkout counter because you bought too much and cannot afford it.
Invite a male participant to take an imaginary shopping trip. Tell him to imagine he has gone to a store and is going to buy a new outfit. His new outfit will consist of a sport coat, shirt, necktie, pants, socks, shoes and even a pair of boxer shorts. Tell him that when he gets to the checkout-counter, he discovers he does not have enough money with him and has to return something to the shelf. The participant then decides on an article of clothing to Unshop and is given the chance to change his mind. He does not tell you yet the article he returned. Show a large envelope and explain that inside is a prediction showing the returned article of clothing. Pull out a large barcode and explain that this is the barcode for the article (an old gag, but with a new kicker ending). Show the envelope to be otherwise empty. Then, ask the participant which article of clothing he returned.
Assume the participant says, "Pants."
Exclaim that you were correct, insisting that this is the barcode for a pair of pants. Finally, turn the barcode around and show a comical photo of a man wearing a sports coat, shirt, necktie, socks, shoes and boxer shorts...however, he is missing the pants!
A very commercial effect that breathes new life into the old barcode gag.

(6) Consignment – James Howell: For years magicians have been making signed cards appear in envelopes. Consignment has taken a giant leap forward with this effect! The ingenious gimmick means that the envelope can be out on the table before the card is even selected. This is definitely out of the box thinking.
Effect:
The magician introduces a small envelope that is left in full view on the table. Next, a card is selected and signed by the spectator. The card is then lost in the deck and the deck is slipped back into the box and placed in the magician's pocket. The magician then draws attention to the envelope on the table. (9) Rise And Shine – Dan Hauss: Two spectators freely select cards from a normal deck, sign them and place them back in the deck. You place the cards in your shirt pocket, close your eyes and concentrate.
Slowly the first signed card rises out of your pocket from within the deck. The rise happens with your hands nowhere near your pocket and in full view of your audience at all times.
If that wasn't shocking enough, the second signed card eerily rises out.
This can all be accomplished with a borrowed deck and uses no threads, no magnets, no weights or electronics. The rise is completely under your control.

(10 Word Sight – Devin Knight: Imagine revealing two freely thought-of words from across the room using an ungimmicked dictionary! Imagine doing this 15 feet away and never touching the dictionary during the presentation.
Devin Knight's Word Sight allows you to reveal two words, sight unseen, that are freely chosen from word lists containing hundreds of words. There are no duplicate words in the lists. No special dictionary or certain edition is required. The four page re-stickable word lists can be placed inside the covers of any dictionary, even a borrowed one
Each of two spectators thinks of a word on the lists, looks up the meaning, and concentrates on the word. You pick up a notepad and without saying anything, you write two words, tear-off the paper and place it writing down on the table. You never touch the paper again. The participants reveal the words they are thinking of, one of them picks up the paper, and there written in bold letters are the same two words.
This can also be done using only one participant who thinks of two words and you reveal them both without asking any questions.
There are no forces, limitations, dual reality, or pre-show work of any kind. The spectators have free choices of hundreds of words! There are no verbal clues; you use only your eyes. The participants never write anything. The spectators tell you nothing!
Nothing is used but the dictionary with the word lists pasted to the inside covers and a notepad for writing the two thought-of words. The thought-of words can be revealed even if the borrowed dictionary is a cheap one that does not have the words in it.
