On the home front, Bonnie, the wife and mother elf, has been deeply involved in a personal crusade to save four baby birds. Sometime in April, she hung a flowering plant outside our front door. Last week while she was going out to get the newspaper, she noticed that some birds had built a nest right in the middle of her plant. Inside the nest were four baby birds. But, the mommy and daddy bird were nowhere to be seen. Since it was Mother’s Day and Bonnie was feeling very motherly, she got on the phone to try and figure out what to do for the birdlings. The best advice she got was to place a bowl of bird seed near the nest, and see if either of the parental birds showed up for feeding. They did not. But, two days ago, when I went out to get the newspaper, there were both the mommy and daddy birds taking care of the birdybabies. I love a story with a happy ending. I have been trying to make all of my stories magic-relevant. Before closing this paragraph, I want to remind you to register for next year’s Conclave.
Also on the home front, Aron is winging his way to Italy right now. It has been an adventure getting him ready for his summer abroad. That Aron, he left with 30 pounds of personal items, mostly cigars,and 20 pounds of books. He is taking his summer projects quite seriously; at least that’s what he wants us to believe!
Next, we turn our attention to Lucas’ summer. It will all start next week when I drive to Oberlin, Ohio to pick him and his worldly goods up and bring them home. He will then have about a month to get ready for his Italian adventure. They’re all going away for the summer. Soon it will be just Bones and me. And the hammock.

(3) Zodiac Sensation: A great walk around effect which can be performed at any time. This is one of the most elegantly produced items in the Collectors' Workshop line.
A small brass box has been on the table or in the spectator's pocket throughout your act.
The spectator is asked to identify her Zodiac sign; we'll assume she says Gemini. The performer then names his; we'll assume it is Taurus.
For the first time, the performer removes the lid on the box. Inside is a silver dollar-size medallion with the 12 signs of the Zodiac emblazoned on it.
"Examine this closely," the performer tells the spectator as he places the medallion in her hand.
"Notice that a small gem has been permanently impressed in the medallion." A ruby is, in fact, mounted in the medallion at the performer’s sign (in this case, Taurus).
"Turn the medallion over," requests the performer.
Spectator does so, and finds another ruby impressed at the Gemini sign! (or whatever sign happens to be hers).

On June 18, 1969 in Hampton Falls, Massachusetts, eight high school students spent one terrifying night in an abandoned and purportedly haunted insane asylum. Not all of them survived...

A spectator is asked to separate the photos into two groups. This is done in the fairest possible manner.

(8) T’Ang Dynasty Tea Chest: Collectors' Workshop presents one of its most sought-after original treasures.
The T'Ang Dynasty in China ruled that land for almost three centuries.
It was a time of great prosperity and great cultural achievements. It is appropriate, therefore, that this fine item carry the name, and the soul, of an era that attracted diplomats and traders, scholars and poets. This, you see, is a piece of commercial magic that is poetry as well.
The performer borrows a finger ring, noting man's continuing fascination with jewelry in general, and rings in particular. Other societies valued particular commodities, as well.
So saying, performer inserts the ring in a small paper envelope, sealing it and leaving it in full view of the spectator.
"Ancient China," says the performer, "valued its wide and wonderful variety of teas. Today teas, like precious metals, have continued to command reverence throughout the world."
At this moment, the performer points to, but does not touch, a magnificent, small tea chest. Its exterior of exotic wood reflects well the hours of hand-rubbed attention paid by an artisan of the old school. Hanging from the front of the chest is a small string with a familiar tea bag tag.
"Decide for yourself which precious possession is the more compelling - tea or gold. Some believe they are interchangeable."
With these words and a snap of the fingers, the performer opens the envelope. It contains nothing but fragrant tea leaves. Gesturing to the tea chest, the performer approaches it, hand open and obviously empty, and shakes the chest slightly. There is a tell-tale rattle. The performer opens the chest, allowing spectator to see that it is chock full of tea bags. The performer grasps the tag on the outside of the box and lifts the attached bag from the chest. Inside the tea bag that was inside the box, is the spectator's ring!
The bag is immediately torn open and the ring - the same ring that was borrowed - is returned.
This is a fine, usable and, yes, poetic piece of magic. It plays well for parlor and close-up. The effect comes with full routine and presentation. It is a piece you will be proud to own; performing with it says a great deal about your own demands for quality and pure entertainment.
