Lucas and I spent an excellent weekend in Chicago. Lucas, ever on the audition trail for college, had an audition at Roosevelt University on Saturday. Since I really love Chicago, I pulled parent duty for this trip. We flew into Chicago on Friday evening and stayed at the Palmer House, one of the truly grand hotels. Saturday was audition day, so we spent most of the day at Roosevelt. Sunday was free, as our flight home was not until 5:00 PM. The only hitch in the plan was that the weather changed in Chicago, and when we left the hotel in the morning, it was four below zero. Even for a Boston boy, that’s mighty cold. But, we bundled up and went exploring up and down Michigan Ave. Great stores, wonderful architecture, and so clean. It was a pleasure, except that we were freezing. We got the car and sped off to La Pasadita, a tiny Mexican restaurant only a few miles from the hotel. There are actually three La Pasaditas, all on the same street. We chose La Pasadita Number Two,
and had an amazing lunch for almost no money. After lunch, we drove to Magic, Inc., the mecca for magic in Chicago. We could not have had a nicer visit. Both Sandy and Susan Marshall were more than gracious. The shop looks great. Everything is nicely displayed. The Marshalls have done a great job bringing Magic, Inc. back. If you are ever in the Chicago area, you really should stop in and visit. You don’t have to buy anything, save that part for us. Oh, OK, you can buy
something.

Gypsy’s Whisper: A brand new effect from Pieras Fitikides using a clever principle in a very unusual way. The uses for this apparatus are mind-boggling.
Remove an old laminated photo of a mysterious Gypsy from an envelope; she is gazing into a solid black crystal ball. Explain that some cultures believe that if their photo is taken, the possessor of the photo also possesses their soul. Such is the case with our Gypsy fortune-teller.
A playing card is selected by a spectator. The Gypsy is asked to reveal the selected card. Slowly gazing into the black abyss of the crystal ball a faint speck appears; slowly the image becomes clearer and finally it is seen that the name of the selected card is revealed in the center of the crystal ball! Just as mysteriously, the image fades into blackness.
Another spectator is asked to select a card and the Gypsy again is asked to reveal its identity. Again, slowly, another image appears, the image of the second selected card! This also fades to black at the command of the performer.
Anything, and I mean anything, can be predicted by the Gypsy; a word, line drawing, number, playing card, serial number, you name it. The effects are unlimited.

SOUPED CAN: Two selected cards are lost into the pack. Both cards are then found through a random number offered by the spectators. The cards are lost for a second time and the spectators proceed to find both cards with the deck in their own hands!
JUST IN CASE: Three cards are chosen and returned to the pack. One card appears under the card case, but it’s the wrong card. With a snap, another card appears under the case and this time, it is a selection! Next, the first ‘wrong’ card changes into a selection and finally the whole deck appears under the card case except for the final selection!
FOILED: The magician demonstrates how an impression of a coin can be made in tin foil. Then he proceeds to ‘mint’ a second coin right out of the mould! Cautioning that it is a fake he then screws the coin into a tin foil ball and hands it out for examination!

Baffling Bumper Stickers – Larry Becker & Lee Earle: "The bumper sticker," begins the performer as he shows a selection of them - all of which are cut in half, "is a source of 5-Star wisdom often using four-letter words. They're a short-form expression of attitude, philosophy, and humor. You can find them at truck stops, novelty shops, and bargain swap meets everywhere."
He shows the halves of two different bumper stickers saying, "If you cut them in half and mismatch them, the results can be interesting." (The audience will laugh at a couple of the combinations; they were designed for that purpose.)
Placing a business envelope in full view, he continues, "There are halves of two different bumper stickers in here (they can be seen through the address window) that usually combine with others to get an amusing reaction."
"One of you will choose a half-sticker from these," the performer continues, spreading the stack of severed stickers face up for a nearby participant. "As you can see, there are more than two dozen random possibilities. Which one would you like?"
After the helper freely chooses one of the halves, the mentalist instructs, "That was an intentional choice, influenced perhaps by color or subject matter."
He turns the stack of half-stickers face down and reminds, "Now you'll select one blindly, and randomly, so it will be a surprise for both of us." The selected, face down sticker-half is retained by the performer and the remainder set aside.
"I'll keep you in suspense a moment longer," remarks the mentalist, as he pairs it with one of the sticker-halves from the envelope, smiles, and tucks the pair partially in his breast pocket, still (and always) fully visible to the audience.
"Let's try the half sticker you picked earlier, "suggests the mentalist reaching for the participant's piece. He aligns it with the remaining half from the envelope and his eyebrows go up. "Well, this is weird," remarks the entertainer. He turns them around: they are opposite ends of the same bumper sticker!
"But I promised you something funny," reminds the mentalist, removing the pair of half-stickers from his breast pocket. "And this is funny!" He holds them up for everyone to see; the second pair is also a perfect match!

Adventures Ashore: Paul Romhany’s Adventures Ashore is an entertaining and topical three-phase book test without any books! Paul Romhany has been performing this routine on cruise ships and in his mentalism show on land for several years and now offers it to the magic fraternity.
Explain that you love cruising and while on ships you collect the "port guides" that the ship hands out at each port they visit. In fact, you brought some with you. Bring out a dozen port guides and displays them to the audience.
Explain that you will try an experiment with the port guides and place them all back in an envelope. A spectator is asked to reach into the envelope and take out any port guide (a free choice) and look at the front page and remember any word. Another spectator takes out another port guide and is asked to read any paragraph on the back page and try and visualize an image or "drawing" to do with that paragraph. A third spectator is asked to take out any port guide and tear it in to pieces, choosing one piece and looking at a word on the piece.
You are able to tell the word the first spectator is thinking, draw the object the second person is imagining and a dictionary is opened and the thought of word is the only word circled.
This routine can be performed in any situation from stage, platform and close-up. Three’s Company: Three predictions are made and three cards are selected under increasingly more difficult conditions. Of course all the predictions match the selected cards.
Sox In Box: A signed card disappears from the deck while in the spectator's hands. The card is then found inside a sealed and stapled envelope, which was inside a rolled up rubber banded pair of socks, which were inside the smallest of three nested boxes.
Dream Reality: An envelope with a description of a dream you had is given to a spectator to hold. Then three random events occur... a card is chosen, a matchbook is selected from a bag full of them, a word is chosen from a paperback novel. When the envelope is opened the dream matches all three random events.
Birthday Surprise: Using body language as a premise you guess the spectator's freely chosen card and their birth date.
